このページの使い方

最初は「ベスト33」から。カードを開くと、〇の表現・×の表現・解説を比較できます。「日本語だけ」で思い出す練習、「英語だけ」で表現の復習ができます。

〇はこの場面で使いたい表現、×は比較用の表現です。×には文法の誤りだけでなく、場面・相手との関係・口調による違いも含まれます。常に間違いや失礼になるという意味ではありません。

日常で使う表現から、まずはこの33項目を練習しましょう。

ポイント Why? だと「理由を説明しろ」と詰問のように聞こえる。定番の聞き方。

ポイント 国籍の前には a を付けない。「a Japanese person」なら OK。

ポイント 相手が知らない可能性を残さないと、上から目線になる。

ポイント 古くて堅苦しく、今どきのネイティブはほぼ使わない。

ポイント 感想を聞く定番は How do you like...?。Do you like...? は Yes/No で終わる。

6お仕事は何を? 初対面・自己紹介 What do you do?

ポイント What do you do? が定番。「job」を出さないのが自然。

7なるほど/そうなんだ あいさつ・返事・相槌 I see. / That makes sense.

ポイント I know. は「知ってる(言われなくても)」という切り捨て感。

ポイント I don't know. の連発は投げやりに。I'm not sure. が柔らかい。

ポイント 日本人あるある No.1。think の目的語は「何を」なので What。

ポイント Thanks a lot. は皮肉(=ありがたいね〜)に聞こえることも。

11遊ぼう! 誘う・断る・あいまいな返事 Let's hang out! / Wanna hang out?

〇 使いたい表現 Let's hang out! / Wanna hang out?

× 比較表現 Let's play!

ポイント play は「子供が遊ぶ」。大人の「遊ぶ」は hang out / go out。

12(追加注文を)もう大丈夫です 誘う・断る・あいまいな返事 I'm good, thank you.

〇 使いたい表現 I'm good, thank you.

× 比較表現 I'm okay.

ポイント 断りの定番は I'm good, thanks.。I'm okay. だけだと通じにくい。

13考えとくね 誘う・断る・あいまいな返事 Maybe! I'll let you know.

〇 使いたい表現 Maybe! I'll let you know.

× 比較表現 I'll think about it.

ポイント I'll think about it. は「ほぼやんわり断り」と受け取られる定番。

× 比較表現 I don't care.

ポイント I don't care. は「どうでもいい」と冷たく聞こえる。

× 比較表現 What do you want?

ポイント What do you want? は無愛想。店側は Can I help you? が基本。

16コーヒーをください 店・レストラン Could I get a coffee, please?

× 比較表現 Please give me a coffee.

ポイント give me は命令口調。「Can I get〜?」が実用 No.1。

17どうぞおかけください 店・レストラン Please, have a seat.

ポイント Sit down. は命令に聞こえる。来客には have a seat。

ポイント toilet は便器そのもののイメージで直截。restroom / bathroom が無難。

ポイント Wait. の単発は命令に聞こえる。Hold on / Just a sec. が自然。

× 比較表現 We need to talk.

ポイント We need to talk. は「別れ話・解雇・大ゲンカ」の前フリとして有名。

× 比較表現 Do you understand?

ポイント Do you understand? は相手の理解力を疑う上から目線に。

× 比較表現 You are wrong.

ポイント 指摘は「人(You)」でなく「物事(That)」へ向ける。

ポイント almost は「ほぼ(あと少しで)」。most / almost all が正しい。

ポイント I understand. は堅い上に「わかってるから」にも聞こえる。

× 比較表現 Are you tired?

ポイント Are you tired? は文字通り「(顔色が)疲れて見えますよ」と失礼になり得る。

26へとへとだよ 体調・気持ち I'm exhausted. / I'm wiped out. / I'm beat.

〇 使いたい表現 I'm exhausted. / I'm wiped out. / I'm beat.

× 比較表現 I'm tired very much.

ポイント 「とても疲れた」は exhausted / beat。very much の位置も不自然。

27痛い! 体調・気持ち It hurts! / Ouch!

〇 使いたい表現 It hurts! / Ouch!

× 比較表現 I'm painful.

ポイント painful は「(物事が)つらい・痛ましい」。体の痛みは It hurts。

28恥ずかしい… 体調・気持ち I'm embarrassed. / That's embarrassing.

〇 使いたい表現 I'm embarrassed. / That's embarrassing.

× 比較表現 I'm shy.

ポイント shy は性格そのもの。その場の恥ずかしさは embarrassed。

29ワクワクしてる! 体調・気持ち I'm so excited.

× 比較表現 I'm exciting.

ポイント excited = 自分がワクワク / exciting = 物事がワクワクさせる。

30退屈… 体調・気持ち I'm bored.

〇 使いたい表現 I'm bored.

ポイント I'm boring. だと「私はつまらない人間です」になる。

31危ない! 体調・気持ち Watch out! / Look out!

〇 使いたい表現 Watch out! / Look out!

× 比較表現 Dangerous!

ポイント Dangerous! は状況の説明でしかない。警告は Watch out!

32頑張って! リアクション You got this! / I'm rooting for you! / Good luck!

ポイント Do your best. は「最善を尽くせ」という命令に聞こえる。 応援は You got this! / Good luck!

33(評価は)まあまあかな リアクション It was alright. / Pretty good.

× 比較表現 So-so.

ポイント So-so は「あまり良くなかった」と否定的に聞こえる。

ポイント 聞き返しの What? はぶしつけ。didn't catch that が定番。

ポイント Let's be friends. は子供の友達作りの言い方。大人は誘う形にする。
